Worship in the Mission-Shaped Church
Ryan Bell & Scott Arany - view profile
So much of the debate around worship degenerates into a battle over consumer preferences (electric guitars vs. organs, hymns vs. praise choruses). Churches compete to hold the attention of an often dwindling audience such that stylistic considerations and excellence of performance too often dominates the worship conversation.
This workshop will look at the theology of worship in a missional framework with an eye to overcoming surface level debates over style and form to the more important question of the formation of a worshipping community as a place where God would be pleased to dwell. We will share how seasonal rhythms of the church year, scripture, prayer, art, music and sacrament have begun to form a missional imagination at the Hollywood Seventh-day Adventist Church in which our life in God invites us to be the healing presence of Christ in the world and our life in the world drives us back to our life in God.

Worship Journey for Pastors: Working with your worship team to bring your congregation into the presence of God

The metaphor of the journey is used to unpack the rich meaning of the corporate worship experience. Questions posed are: What is Worship? Who is invited to worship? What means of transportation can be used? Who is the guide? What is a worship team? How can we make substantive changes without changing a worship style?

Film is the primary storyteller, myth maker in our culture. Americans on average see 45 movies a year. How should/can the church make use of film in their worship and in the wider life of the church? Can God be found there, as well?
An increasing number of our best movies assume life's messiness, even while projecting life's wonder. Yet too often in our worship we have lost sight of this dialectic, telling only half the story (How often, for example, do you sing a psalm of lament?). Could it be that if life's paradoxes were better embraced, then its Mystery would become more apparent? Can the Church learn something from Hollywood with regard to its worship practices?
Congregational singing has significant potential for adding vitality, depth and richness to corporate worship. Too frequently, however, it is done with marginal participation or even a sense of detachment. While the strength of singing in worship is naturally affected by the level of musical ability in the congregation, it is often – and perhaps more closely -- linked to the vision and purposefulness of those who lead it. While not minimizing the significant role of choirs and other musicians, the singing voice of the congregation remains at the heart of music in the life of the church.
This workshop will survey premises, goals and helps for rediscovering and energizing singing by the congregation. A portion of the time (especially session 2) will be spent in singing, with special attention given to effective congregational song leading. While especially addressing hymn singing, it will also touch on dynamics surrounding the variety of musical styles that have become a part of worship in many churches.

Ed Willmington - view profile
Worship practices have become controversial in modern times. In many cases churches have split over worship styles – thus the term “worship wars.” In this session an attempt will be made to look beyond style preferences to larger issues of consideration when addressing worship conflict. Some practical suggestions will be offered for minimizing worship conflict in the interest of congregational unity and connection with God.
